Rock U - People - Extending the Add Family Block v13

Transcribed Video Content

In a prior video, we saw the add family block in action as we were adding, new people and families into the system. In this video, we're gonna take a look at the block settings for the add family block so you can see all the additional options and customizations that you can have associated with it. In fact, there are so many options with the add family block that a lot of organizations have multiple different instances of it on different page, each configured to do something slightly different. So let's take a look at what options you have. Alright. So to start, we're going to go to people and new family. That's going to get us to the, add family block. We've seen this page, and we're familiar with it. But if we open up the block settings, we can see that there are quite a few of them. Now, a lot of these are fairly self explanatory, so we're going to be skipping over some of them. But you can always read the help text associated with these. And you can also check out our manuals to get more details on what some of the other settings do that we're not going to cover. First of all, we have the group type up here. And so just remember that families are groups. And when a new family gets added, it will be created as a group of this type, whatever type you select here. And so it'll typically be family, but, you can create other groups of different types by, changing this setting. So again, it'll mostly be family, as we see here, but it can be different if you want it to. We also have the parent group. And what this does is the group that gets created, remember a family is a group, so the group that's created can be placed under a parent group that you select here. In this case, for families, we're going to leave this blank, so families are just at the root level. All right. And then, again, we're going to skip over some of these here that are kind of self explanatory and cut down here to show inactive campuses. Now, you might be wondering why you'd ever want to show inactive campuses. And there's a couple reasons. It could be that your campus isn't launched yet, but maybe you want to show it from an entry perspective, something that. And so as we continue down here, again, there's some that are that are pretty obvious and and have help text to sort of help guide you, but what we wanna look at next is attribute categories. And this is a really important setting because what this allows us to do is ask additional questions about the person beyond just, , sort of the name and address and that kind of stuff. So if we come here, we can see we've already got a couple set up in this instance. You probably won't have any at first until you add them, but we went ahead and added education and employment. So we have those two selected, and we're gonna save it that. And just in case, we're gonna reload the block. So I'm gonna refresh the page here. Okay. And now to show you what we just did with the attribute categories in particular, we're gonna go ahead and add a couple people. Okay. So here we're gonna add a couple people, John and Jane Doe. And, we've got an address, and we've got everything filled out for them here. So we're gonna click next. And then we come to the home phone and email portion. And for our purposes here, we're just gonna skip over this and hit next. Normally, in this case, this would be the end of the process. But because we added those attribute categories to the block settings, when I hit next, it's gonna take us to first the employment category. So these are attributes under the employment category, employer and position. And so now for each of the people that we're adding in this family, we can list their employer and their position as attributes. And then if we click we're gonna skip over this now just for time. But if we go ahead and click next, then we can see the next set of attributes that we added, which which was the education category that we added to the block setting. So now we can pick, , the school that the person went to and record those attributes. And, again, we can come to the, block settings at any point and change those attribute categories to ask, different types of questions. But as you can see here, , so for example, for the, employment category, the employment category has two attributes under it, employer and position. , so some of you might be wondering, what if I don't want all of the attributes within a particular category to appear in this block? , what if I just want to choose which specific attributes to ask for? Okay. So for that, keep in mind that an attribute can have more than one category. So what you could do is you could create a new category just for use on the new family screen, just just for use with this add family block, and then assign the individual attributes that you want to that special category. And then you would come into your block settings, pick that new category that you created, and then only the questions that you want, only the attributes that you want, will be shown. So, knowing all of this, and knowing how all the block settings on this block work, hopefully you can start to see the power that this block has to enable different, entry scenarios for your organization. I think you'll find that, the more you use this block and customize it, the the more uses you'll find for it.
