When it comes to giving, a person can be thought of as being in a certain place, on a certain path, or a journey, if you will. Rock's giving journey feature tells you exactly where a person is in their giving. So for instance, are they a new giver? Have they been consistently giving? Have they stopped giving?
The giving journey for a person will tell you exactly where they are, giving you insight into where their heart is when it comes to finances. Let's take a look. We'll start with viewing a couple of giving journeys for a couple of different individuals. So first, we'll look at Ted Decker. And if we pull up his profile and go to the contributions tab, you can see under the giving overview that Ted's giving journey stage is consistent because he's a consistent giver.
And that's backed up by, for instance, the giving by month chart that we see here where we can tell that, he pretty much gives every month. He's he's a very consistent giver. But we can compare that to somebody Trish Lowe, who, if we check out her giving information, is a former giver. And, again, that's backed up by the data we see down here. Trish used to give, but then stopped.
So she's now a former giver. So how does all of this get set up? The configuration for this is under the finance menu and under giving alerts. And here you can see the giving alerts, but up at the top right corner of the block is the gear icon, and we'll click that. And here we have the giving automation configuration.
And under the general settings, we have the giving journey settings. So right at the top, you can select which days to run, the giving journey calculations, which days to update giving journeys. By default, it's only one day out of the week, but you can add other days as needed. It's just a means to help keep the the load on your system a little bit light by not having it, run every day. And then down below, we have the criteria that need to be met for each stage of the giving journey.
So whether they're a new giver, an occasional giver, or a non giver. So let's take a look at these one at a time. So a former giver is somebody who has stopped giving entirely. And this is out of the box defined as somebody who has not given at all within the past three hundred and seventy five days, and they have a median frequency less than 320. So in other words, when they did give, their frequency was at least their median frequency was at least once every three hundred and twenty days.
So if they were giving once every month but haven't for the past year, we would call them a former giver. Down below, we have a lapsed giver, which has very similar settings. But for comparison purposes, you can see, okay, they haven't given in the last a hundred and fifty days, and their median frequency is less than a hundred days. So less than, , once every three months or so. So if the person used to give anywhere from, , once a day to once every hundred days as a median, but they haven't in the last hundred and fifty days, then they're a lapsed giver.
Doesn't mean that they've stopped giving, but they haven't contributed recently. Down below, we have the settings for a new giver. So this is somebody who is given between one and five times with that first gift being within the past hundred and fifty days. So they gave within a hundred and fifty days and have given between one and five gifts. An occasional giver is somebody who has a median frequency between, in in this case, thirty three and ninety four days.
So an occasional giver would be somebody who gives less frequently than once a month, but more frequently than roughly once every three months or so. Lastly, you have a consistent giver, and this is defined as somebody with a median frequency of less than thirty two days. So if somebody gives at least once every thirty two days on average, they're considered a consistent giver. And then there are no criteria for a non giver. A non giver is just someone who has never given.
Now, it's important to note that when determining a giving journey stage for an individual, the giving automation job, which is which is what calculates this and and assigns giving journey stages, goes in the order that they're listed here. So it'll evaluate a person first to see if they're a former giver. If they're not, then it'll go on to lapsed giver, and so on and so forth in in that order. So, again, knowing what stage of the giving journey a person is in gives you insight into where their heart is when it comes to giving. What's even better is that a person's current and former giving stages are stored as person attributes.
So you can easily access them for reporting or communications. On top of that, the date on which a person's giving journey stage changed is also stored as a person attribute, so you can use that too.
