Rock U - Websites - Adding Pages and Blocks

Transcribed Video Content

Alright. So let's look at how to add pages and blocks to Rock. So in this case, let's pretend that HR has come to you and said that they want to put up a holiday schedule underneath the intranet link. So the first thing we need to do is we need to go to the parent page, that we want to put that child page under so we can create it. Now there's a few ways you could do that. I'd recommend, finding that parent page on the internal site by using the configuration option. And underneath there there's something called page map. This will allow you to drill down to the intranet and the office information which is where you want that page to live. If I continue, expanding that tree view, I'll see all the child pages there. But I really want this new page to be a sibling of these. So I'll go ahead and select the parent page which is office information. Now most of your in page editing for pages and blocks is gonna be done in the admin toolbar down at the bottom. So to get that you have kind of to roll your mouse down at the bottom of the screen and a whole bunch of tools will show up. One of those tools is the child pages tools. So we since we want to add a page, we'll go ahead and click that. And again, we'll see all the sibling pages here and we'll add one. And from here I can pick the layout, so I want to choose full width but I could choose any of the others that were defined, by that theme. Okay. Our page is now created. I hit done and that will cause Rock to load again. And if I come over to my menu, I'll have to hit refresh one more time here. If I come over to my menu, then you'll see your new page. So let's go ahead and navigate to that page. Okay. So, kind of a bland page. Let's go ahead and add a block to this page. So, on that one we're gonna go over and we're gonna highlight the page zones and this will show us all the different zones that we could drop blocks into. So, I'm gonna go ahead and choose the main zone and edit that. Okay. So now, I'm ready to add a block. The first thing I need to decide is do I wanna add a block just to this page which is what I want to do or I could alternatively add a block to all pages that use the same layout and I don't wanna do that in this case. So I'm just gonna add a content block that I can type some of the schedule into. So I'll give it a name. Now here is where I'm gonna choose my block type. Now, I personally want this HTML content one for what I'm doing but I could choose any different block that's in Rock and there's quite a few. So I would strongly recommend that you go through this list and try to understand all the different blocks that Rock has. Again, these are the Legos that you're gonna be building Rock with. So you really wanna have a good understanding of what all these do and the capabilities of each. But I said, in this case, I just wanna do a simple HTML content block and I'm gonna hit save. And then done. Okay. Now the page is loaded. I'm ready to start editing that content. So I actually want to start playing with that, block that I added. So I'll go back and I'll hit the block configuration tool and now it's gonna highlight every single block that's on this page that I can configure. Now, know I just added the schedules block to this main one so I'll go ahead and edit the HTML. And then I'd paste in the schedule that they provided me. Now, when I'm using this HTML block, by default it's gonna start in this code mode. This is HTML. If I want to do more of a Wetzuweg, I don't I want to type in, be able edit it word, I can switch over. And that's a setting that you can change. Speaking of blocks and block settings, I chose when I did that to edit it. But I could also go in there and right next to it, there's a block properties. And these are all the block settings for this block. I'm not gonna go through what all these do, but it's important that your block settings and look at them because this is a lot of the power of Rock is not only in the block but in the block settings. So in this case, I did mention to use that code editor and so I could actually switch that to no which would default it to use WetzeeWig. Just blocks have settings, so do pages. So let's look at this page's properties. And this time we're gonna go down the admin toolbar and choose page properties which is the gear. And when I come in here I see different names for the page. Now, if you remember I only provided one name but behind the scenes there's actually three different names and the name that you provided gets defaulted to all three. So the internal name is gonna be something more you're gonna see in that tree view when we're going to internally to to pick that page. The page title is actually what shows up at the top of the page right here, the holiday schedule is the page title. And then the last one is the browser title. So that's what shows up way up here in this tab. Now, lot of times those are gonna be the same but you actually have the option to change those and sometimes that makes a lot of sense. If I wanna change the layout of a page without having to recreate it, I can come in here and just choose its layout. And there's a ton of other just different options that you can put here. You might look at the block settings, the the display settings, I'm sorry, which shows you a lot more, configuration about the page whether they even show the title on the page, whether breadcrumbs should be shown, where the icon should be shown up in the page title, and then when it should be displayed in the menu. And we'll talk about those in a different video. Under advanced settings, a few more, options whether the force SSL, this is really nice if you have a page a giving page that you really have to have SSL on, which is a great option. And whether you want to have a page route. So that's kind of a friendly name. So up here instead of saying page fifty four fifteen, I could give it a nice friendly route of holiday schedule. And now I can reference it with that nice name. Okay. So that's how to add security I'm sorry, pages to the internal site. Let's look at how to do the same thing on the external site. And it's actually exactly the same thing. So we got to our external site, we go under connect. Let's just say now we need to add a singles ministry to this list. So same thing, we're gonna add a child page, click add and then done. Let's reload the page to see it in the menu and you'll see it's down here. Now, maybe you're thinking, gosh, that's not really where where I want the singles mission, I want it to be up higher under adults. And that's easy, just go back into your child pages and you can just drag that up. And there it is. Okay. So we're gonna go to this page, go ahead and add some blocks to this page. So add a nice, content where we can put all the main content. And let's just say in this case, so we wanna add another block but we only want that block, excuse me, to have certain rights. So maybe only the singles leaders could see that block. Let's go ahead and add that. So maybe a leaders message. And I'm gonna drag that one above it. Okay. So let's go ahead and add some quick content. Put the leader's message in and then maybe some quick content below it. Okay. So now these blocks are there, they have content, but unfortunately this leaders message is always gonna show. So let's go ahead and change that. We go back to block configuration and there's a padlock here. If I click on that, I can now change the security just for this block. So in this case, I only want the the singles leadership to see that. So I'll go ahead and add a role and I've gone ahead and added a custom role here for singles leaders. Okay. So now they're allowed to see it down here, but so are still all users. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna drag this one above it and then deny all users. So what happens is Rock comes down this list and says, okay, are you a singles leader? Yep. You can you can see it and then it stops because it found a match. Now if I'm not a singles leader, it's gonna keep just going down this list and it's gonna hit all users and say deny. So now, if someone were to come to this page, now I'm currently logged in as a singles leader and a, administrator. So I see both. But if I wasn't, this message would go away. So that's how you add pages and blocks to Rock.
