Rock U - Rock Fundamentals - What is an Entity

Transcribed Video Content

There are a couple vocabulary terms you should know about when using Rock and one of them is entity. We use the word entity all over the place. So let's help define that. If you were given the task to clean up a junk drawer, the first thing you'd probably do is you'd look in there and you'd look for common things. if we look at this picture, we can see some writing instruments, some money, some nails and screws. And the first thing in your head that you would do is you'd start putting those and grouping those things into common objects. It's the same thing when we write applications. So back to the junk drawer, you would probably go out and you'd get some boxes and you'd group those items and put them each in their own box. Exact same thing that we do with Rock. Now, what we call those things are entities. So think of each box as an entity. So instead of pencils and and money and writing instruments, we would have things people, groups, financial transactions. Each of those it's its own entity which would have its own box in the database.
