Rock U - Content Management - Phone Number Lookup Configuration
Transcribed Video Content
In this video, we're gonna take a look at the phone number lookup block's configuration and what you'll need to get it set up. If you watch the overview video, then you already know that a prerequisite to the process is having SMS enabled in your Rock system. You'll need to have that in place because as part of the process, the person will receive a text message sent from Rock containing a security code, and so Rock needs to be able to send that text message. If you're not too sure how to do that, we have some Rock U videos on SMS messaging, and you can also check out our documentation in the communicating using Rock guide. But assuming you have SMS set up and you're ready to go, you can start configuring the phone number lookup block.
Let's take a look. There are a couple of different ways to access the block, but we're going to use the CMS route. So we'll go to admin tools, CMS configuration, and pages. And we're gonna go to the external home page and look under support pages and go to the phone number lookup page, which contains the phone number lookup block, and that's what we're interested in. We're gonna check it out from here and manage the block properties before we get to the page.
The first thing we wanna draw your attention to is the text message template. This is where you can customize the content of the SMS text message that the person receives after they provide their phone number. You won't need to make any changes to the text message template, but it is possible to customize it if you want to. Otherwise, just have it pretty simple. Your organization name, verification code is, and then it'll send them a random confirmation code.
Now, you can also set the title to be whatever you want, but what we really want to focus on as we go down the list here is the authentication level. The authentication level is probably the most important setting on this block. And you have two options that you can choose from. You can choose identified, which is the default because this is the lower level access option. It grants access only to areas of Rock that actually use the identified authentication.
Out of the box, these would be places mobile check-in and attendant self entry. The trusted login means that anybody who uses this process will be treated as though they have formally logged into your site with a username and password. So this is gonna give them access beyond attendance self entry or mobile check-in. They would be able to access, , their profile and their giving history and things that. So, again, that's why we have it defaulted to identified because it's a little bit safer, but you can feel free to change it.
As we move down the list of the other options, you can see that we have some, instructions and some messages that you can customize. At each stage of the process, in other words, for each screen that the person will see on their phone as they go through this, you can configure the text that's displayed to the person, and it'll appear at the top of each screen. Again, we'll have a demo of that in the next video. Down near the bottom of the block, we have three settings that we want to call out because they're a little different from the above. The verification time limit indicates how long in minutes the confirmation code can exist and how long it can be used before a new one is needed.
So this is basically an expiration on the confirmation code that the person is sent that they must then type in. Again, we'll go into details on that in the next video. The IP throttle limit is the next setting. This is where you can set how many times per day a single IP address can be used to submit phone numbers for for this verification. In many cases, this is helpful to keep SMS messaging costs down.
If you do ever hit the limit, you'll know about it because an exception will be written to the exception log in Rock. And then last but not least is the SMS number. The number that you provide here will be the number from which the confirmation code will be sent. This requires that you have SMS configured in Rock in advance before you can start using this because it is a required field. We need to know what number the confirmation code should come from.
So I'm gonna go ahead and save that. And now, I'm gonna go directly to the URL. This is where people will go, and it'll look somewhat this. We're looking at this on a laptop, and it would normally be a mobile device. But with our configuration in place, we're ready for the next steps, and we're gonna take a deep dive into what that looks in the next video.
So, we didn't go into each field on the block individually because they're pretty self explanatory, and it'll make a lot more sense, especially after you watch the next video that shows where those messages appear on the phone. But for more details, for full details on all of those settings, be sure and check out the Rock admin hero guide, which is where the phone number lookup block is documented. And thanks for watching.
