Rock U - Communications - Communication Lists & Segments

Rebuilding the same audience for every send is a waste. Communication lists make it easy to have one group of people that you can use again and again, and you can make that even more reusable using segments so that you can slice up that list and make sure the right people get the right communications. To get to communication lists, head to admin tools up to settings and we'll start typing in communication. You'll see communication lists, click on that and you'll see some out of the box here. And some quick things to note here in case you have a large list, you can easily filter between these communication lists.
You can search and you can also go ahead and see the email analytics for just that specific list. You can secure it and you'll also see whether it has a group sync, which I'll show you what that group sync is in a moment when we add a new one. Then of course, see how many members are in that list as well. Noting that each one of these lists is actually just a group under the hood. Now we're going to prepare for one of these lists by adding a group Or sorry, not by adding a group, by adding a data view and then we'll connect it to this group.
So let's go to tools, up to data views. And we're going to add a new foundational view and let's just call it parents of elementary children. And we'll keep this simple. It applies to people. And I'll skip ahead and add the filters here.
Okay. So now I've set up the filters. The grade is greater than or equal to kindergarten, less than or equal to fifth grade. And we're afterwards doing a post filter transformation to parents because this would be getting people that are in elementary, but instead we're gonna get their parents. So let's save.
And now we have those actual parents of elementary children. So we'll go to admin tools settings and we'll head back to communication lists. Now we're gonna add a list. And simply, we'll call it parents of elementary children. It's nice to add a description here to explain what this list is about, but we'll skip that for now.
And it has some group settings that you're probably familiar with or you may have seen before if you've added a group, but we'll skip past these for now. You can also add communication segments that are only relevant to this list. And those will simply be data views if you want to have segments that specifically cut up the list of people in this communication list. But group sync settings, this is what's important. We'll add a new one and we're going to pick that view we just made parents of elementary children and the assigned role as recipient.
So they'll be recipients of the communication list. And we'll say every 12 this syncs. And we can even if we want to add a welcome and exit communication for when someone first shows up in this synced communication list and when they exit. If they first of all match the filters of the data view and then they no longer match the filters. But we'll save.
And we can sync it now by clicking this button. And now we actually have that list of people from the group sync. So nice. Now we have a communication list. We're gonna go add a segment now and then I'll show you where these show up in the communication wizard.
So let's go to admin tools and then settings. And from here, we're gonna look for personalization segments. And we actually have some already with a category of communications. And all we're doing here is taking a data view of people and this data view will be something everyone that's 35 or older, everyone that's female, male, 35. And if we click into one of these, we have the segment set up really simply, it's persisted on a schedule, we've picked the data view.
And on top of that to make these segments really powerful, we can add things segment or session filters, page view filters, interaction filters. For more on these, please watch our personalization segments video or dive into our documentation on personalization segments. But now we know we have this set up, all we have to do now to start using these is head to people down to new communication. And imagine we're sending out a communication and we wanna use a list. We can now select that communication list we saw earlier, then we can subdivide that list by other segments that make sense, 35 and older, female, male, you can stack them on top of each other or just pick one.
And now we're gonna be getting all the parents of elementary children that are 35 and older. Now that we view it, we can see that's totally true and we're now really using those lists and segments. Lists and segments turn your audience into something you set once and you can reuse forever, saving you hours and hours and hours.
