Rock U - Check-In - next-gen-labels

Label printing is actually a big deal and that's because printing a label might be a family's first physical interaction with your ministry. So let's talk about how to design a custom label in Rock and how to get them printed. Okay. Let's look at next gen labels in Rock. So to start, go to admin tools, then settings, and we're gonna type in labels. And there's two different pages we're gonna end up checking out, but let's go to the next gen labels first. You'll notice immediately there's a really nice list of default well made labels in Rock. So you have all these to choose from right out of the box if you wanna use them, but I'm gonna show you what it looks to add a new label. So when you enter, there's some simple configurations such as picking a name and description that fit this label and let other people know what this label is used for. You can also pick a label type just to categorize this label. You can also do some conditional print criteria. And this is helpful if you only want labels to show up under certain circumstances. So you can show or hide a label under different conditions attendee info, check-in info, or varying achievement info. Then something here that's pretty important for how your label will end up being designed is you can pick between ZPL or designed. ZPL stands for Zebra Programming Language, and that's how Rock is communicating with your Zebra printer about how this label is gonna look when it's printed. So if you're familiar with ZPL or you're just taking some ZPL that you've used in the past for labels, you can easily paste that in here. But if you want a nice interface that's drag and drop that you can interact with to build a label, you're probably gonna wanna pick the design to label format. And I'll show you what that looks now. So let's click on the child label. This is a really good example of a label in Rock. One thing I wanna mention first is you'll see these this copy icon here. And this allows you to easily duplicate a label you've already made. If you just wanna make a couple tweaks or take some aspects of another design you've done, you can easily duplicate a label whenever you want. But we're gonna click on the label designer. And here is that drag and drop interface I was talking about. It's a really nice way to quickly get the label that you want in a Rock that really matches your organization. So one of the first things you'll wanna make sure is right is your label dimensions. It's gonna be four width to height by default, and that's often what you're gonna want. But in case your label prints a different way, you'll wanna make sure your dimensions are set properly. Also, if you wanna view this in full screen mode, you can do that pretty easily by clicking this full screen icon. But over here, these controls are what the label is made of. So if you click on any of these things, you'll notice that they're all individual controls. And some of these are used for design, some are used to add info, but these are all very important to creating your label. So you may think this is a lot of information to put on a label. Well, I'm actually gonna show you one of the most special things about these labels are conditions. So for example, we'll look at this icon right here. You might be , why would I show a birthday cake on every label? That doesn't make sense. But this is actually a conditional icon. And this icon pops up when all of the following are true. The days until someone's birthday is less than or equal to seven. So that means if this is the person who's checking in, if it's their birthday week, this icon is gonna pop up for them. We'll also conditionally, using this field, show the day that their birthday was on. And this is really nice to give you context to make the people that check-in feel loved and something about them. Another example is this star icon, and this shows if first time is equal to yes. And this first time means this person is checking in for the first time. And it's really nice to be able to know things that when people are checking in so you can meet them where they're at, make them feel welcome to your ministry. And there's many other conditional things we have here. For example, we have a attendee info property, which is something you can easily drag in, but I'm gonna oops. I'm gonna just delete that. You can drag in images, barcodes, attendee photos, and much more. And if you wanna be really specific about your placement, you can actually add a grid and you can easily snap things to the grid. Then if you ever mess something up, it's easy to press Windows Z or Command Z to undo anything. Now I bet you're wanting to see what this looks in production because there's a lot of conditional things and merge fields from Lava. Oh, but one thing I wanna point out right before that, if you click on one of these controls that are using Lava, you'll see a thing called field. And I'll show you how to set up these fields in just a moment, but let's look at the preview. When you click preview, you get to see what this label actually looks when it comes down to it. So this is with real attendee info. And if you wanna see a specific person, you can add an attendance ID. Then if you wanna see this real physical label printed, you can do that by picking a printer that you have set up and clicking print. Now back to fields. I told you I'd show you where we set this up. So I'm gonna go to the breadcrumbs here and we're gonna go back to the check-in screen. Then I'm gonna click on label merge fields. So looking at label merge fields, there's a bunch of different ones that we already have here, and it's really easy to add your own as well. But you've already seen some of these populating in our labels. An example is the birthday icon or birthday day of week. So if we click here, we can get an idea of how these things are working. It's simply just a defined type and a defined value under the hood, but you pick a value, then you pick a description, and you pick whether or not it's active. And you can type in Lava that's gonna give you a result you can output in your label. And there's endless things that you can put here in the merge field section. As you can see, there's some really complex lava and also some simple ones, and you can use all of these to really personalize your labels. Okay. I hope you're feeling comfortable enough now to print your own labels in Rock and even design your own labels. Thanks for watching this video. Have a great day.
