So let's look at the at the concept of group purposes. So group purposes allow us to take several different group types and kinda combine them into a single unit of meaning. So let's look at an example. So we go back to the example here where we have a group type called serving groups and then we've decided to further have group types below that of worship teams and first impressions. Now, these are all different group types.
Right? And these two bottom ones inherit from serving groups. But they're all at the end of the day, they're all different group types. But let's just say that in our in our case here, they all mean one thing that you're serving. Okay?
And so that we wanna have that concept of if you're in any one of these in a group of any of any one of these types, it means that you're serving. We can kind of wrapper this with a group type purpose of serving. Okay? So there's really no magic to that. You just go into admin tools, general settings, define types.
And one of the defined types that you'll see in there is group type purpose. So you can go in there and just create one. Okay? There's nothing magic to it. You're just basically providing a value or descriptor.
So in our case, we'd call it serving. And once we do that, then when we go into the group type detail screen, we can actually pick it and and determine what the purpose is. And this is where we'd set that. So if we're in this case now we went under admin tools general settings group types, pick the group type and just said its purpose is serving. Okay.
So that's what links them all together. And once they're linked all together, again, at this point, there is no magic to it but it does allow you to do some certain things when it comes to reporting. Okay? So when we look at reporting, what we can do is we can start at the bottom and say, give me all the group types with the purpose of serving. Okay?
So that is a data view that's of type that's looking at the type group types. Okay. And then we're gonna pass that or use that data view in a new data view up above that says it's a it's basically gonna be filtering on groups. So in this case, we're saying give me all the groups of the group types from this data view. Okay.
So definitely go in if this this seems, strange to you, go in and look at the concept of data views especially there's one called weaving data views. And so basically we're weaving two different, types. This is a this one's looking at group types and this one's looking at groups. Now, this data view filter is new to six dot three. So if you don't have six dot three, you probably don't have that.
So when you do use group type purposes, you do have to do this kind of weaving. So it's not you get that for free, you kind of have to set it up in this way. Now, this is probably another topic that you're probably thinking, oh, wow, this is great. Now, I can go out and create all these group types, I can link them all together with a purpose and everything's magical. We would still recommend that you limit the number of group types that you're creating.
Really think through that cons that concept before you go out and start creating a ton of group types. You do take a small performance hit when you have to do this weaving and and adding another layer of filtering here. Depending on what you're trying to do, it may not even be noticeable but it's something you should be aware of because if you start doing big huge group structures, it could have an a noticeable impact. But that is the concept of group purposes.
