Rock U - People - Extending the Add Family Block
Transcribed Video Content
Okay. So let's look at the ad family block. We've already gone through and kind of shown the functionality that it has but few people actually know that you can extend that functionality really easily. And oftentimes in churches, they don't just have one ad family block or page, they'll actually create numerous different pages, each configured for a specific use case. Okay.
So we know from our previous, videos that the ad family is under people, new family. And again, what most people would do, they'll actually create new pages either under people or in some other location within their navigation for these specific, different types of entry. Let's go ahead and just use this one as the pattern. Okay? So again, we've seen this page, we're pretty familiar with it.
Let's look at its block settings. And you should be doing this with all the blocks. When you have a page or a block that doesn't quite do exactly what you want, go ahead and look at the block settings. It's likely that you'd be able to actually change that. So, the settings on this block, are, what type of group are we adding?
Cause while we call this the add family block or add family page, the block name is actually add group. Okay? So here you can add different types of groups. In this case, it's family and that's usually probably how you're gonna use it but you can be clever and actually use different types of group types here. The parent group type is where is this new group gonna be added to.
So in this case, we're just not gonna have parent groups for families, they're just gonna kind of live in the root. You can have different types of locations that you wanna add to it, different default connection statuses. So again, if you're doing, maybe a use case as a child check-in, to get people registered for that, you can choose different connection statuses that you'd want that to be defaulted to. You can have, setting whether the gender is required for each person or not, whether, adult marital status is, the default would be, what the child marital status is. And this is again, if they didn't pick something, what are you gonna what are you gonna do?
So up here in adult, we don't do anything. Down here in child, we're actually gonna say they're gonna be single. And whether, if you don't enter a marital status, should a confirmation be displayed just to make sure that they don't have that information. Also, whether grade is required or not required and whether you should show inactive campuses. Now, first you might say, well, why would I ever wanna show inactive campuses?
It could be that your campus isn't launched yet, but you would do wanna show it from an entry perspective, and also some SMS settings. But the key one, the thing that, is, really helpful is this attribute categories. Okay? Remember when we added a person before, we basically just added their names and then we go to the next screen and we saw phone numbers. This allows us to add ask for different other categories.
Okay? So let's just say, for instance, here we wanted to ask for their school and maybe we want their employment information as part of this process. So again, I can pick several different categories. And when I'm done, I'm just gonna hit select and then save. Okay.
Now, I'm gonna reload this block just to make sure I get my block settings. Okay. So let's just see what we just did here. So let's go back in, let's add a new person. And I wanna go ahead and add actually another person to his family too so we can see this thing in its full detail.
Okay. So I will give her a gender. I don't want to enter marital status. Okay. So far so good.
We're we're still seeing the same screens. This is where we put in the the phone numbers, but I'm gonna hit next. Now notice, I have a new screen here. And basically, what I'm getting is the employment category. And I'm getting all the attributes of that category and then and there's a row for each person.
So I can go ahead and fill in all of these attributes. And if I hit next, I'll get the next attribute category which was education. I can pick the school. And then, well, now that I'm all done, I've run out of attribute categories that I selected, I can hit finish. Now, some would wonder with these categories, how do I get just the attributes that I want into those categories?
And keep in mind that an attribute, a person attribute can have more than one category. So it could be that you create special categories just for this scenario of entering people in and those attributes can also live in different categories that would show up under the extended attributes of the person profile page. Knowing that and how all these block settings work on this add family block, hopefully you see the power that you have right here in creating different entry scenarios for your church. And I think once you see that and you create a few of these new pages, you'll find that there's a lot of power just in this block alone.
