And today, we have Jess Timoney here with us. She is she's been helping our team since July of this year, and we're really excited to have her here. You were at the Rock conference. You may have run into Jess there, or you may have gotten a few emails from her in the last couple of months. Welcome, Jess.
Thank you. So tell us how long you have been exposed to Rock because your first use of Rock goes back to before you actually joined our staff. That's right. So I actually did a residency program with a church out here in Phoenix that uses Rock. And so from the earliest stages of even my residency, I was exposed to the system and a lot of its users, which was really cool.
Oh, that's really great. So you're not originally from Phoenix? No. I'm actually from a small little farm town outside of Boise, Idaho. And I'd probably I'd tell you the name, but you probably wouldn't know where it is.
So And you moved here to work with this team specifically? I did, yes. So I actually heard about, the open position through, my resident coordinators, who I love dearly as family, and they introduced me to Emily and to John and, kind of the rest, we're here now. Right. The rest is history as I Yeah, all worked out very well.
The timing was actually really perfect. And I remember reaching out to that group. They actually worked through Christ Church of the Valley here in Phoenix, which we're connected with some on our team as well. And that's a really great program. And it was pretty exciting to realize that you'd already had exposure to Rock and you had a real heart for ministry, which our team obviously appreciates.
So what is it that you do on the SPARC team, Jess? Yeah. I've been wondering this for a while. So I do a kind of a couple of different facets of things. I work a lot with our Rock partners and, just making sure that they have everything that they need.
And then we also do, we to highlight their generosity on our social media page, which is, a lot of my other kind of different avenues. All the posts that you see, lot of those are collaborated and put together by me. And then I also work with our fundraising and really showing and helping churches see the the benefit of how their generosity propels Rock Forward. Right, and in addition to that, there's this small little section of what you do called event planning, which took over your life when you first came to work here at Spark A Baby. I think I might have been suppressing it a little bit, maybe.
No. So I do a lot of our event planning. So with the master class, Robin and I kind of team up together, and I do help plan a lot of different events. So the Rx twenty nineteen that's coming up and the Masterclass as well. I'll take a lot of that planning under my belt too.
Great. So a little plug for Masterclass. If you wanna meet Jess in person, come to the small format master class. I think we have one left this year. Right?
Yes. Yes. Right around my birthday, actually. Oh, wonderful. That's definitely a do not miss event.
Right? You might get some cupcakes homemade out of it. Oh. What kind? I love to do chocolate.
Anything chocolate. So That would be convincing for me. We could have a huge influx at this next master class. I came for the cupcakes. I think there may be a new chip sticker that should come out of this.
This could be the most expensive cupcakes ever. Well, I think it's also Rock's birthday somewhere around Well, maybe that's October. Nevermind. When is the masterclass? Masterclass is November.
Okay. Right? Am I right? Mhmm. So we talked a little bit about the story of how you came to join Rock.
Had you heard of the Spark team? I know you'd worked in Rock, but what was your, , what was your general first impression? We'll just put you on the spot. What did you think when you first heard about our team, when you first came to meet us? Yeah.
So I actually knew Emily's name prior to actually even meeting her in person, just because I did a lot of the administration piece during my residency, and her name was on on a lot of our documents, and a lot of the processes that we had actually had Emily's name on them. So I actually had met her prior to really actually meeting her. But my first impression, I walked in for my interview, and as most people, I was really nervous. But both John and Emily were really gracious and was able to lower down my anxiety just even by the questions that they asked. I've never had somebody ask me if I liked Star Wars more than Star Trek, and I appreciated that.
That's good. Letting our secret questions out of the bag. Oh, no. I'm sorry. Not everybody gets that question.
Wait. Gets it or understands it, you mean? Both, actually. Yeah. I have no idea what you're talking about.
Yeah. But yet they still manage to get hired. So Someone's gonna slip through the cracks. It's just how it goes. So, Jess, what does your average workday look here?
It's ever changing, which I really actually enjoy because if you do the same thing every day, then you can get stagnant. But recently, I've been working a lot with our fundraising and connecting with churches and connecting with potential new partners and then planning for our next upcoming master class. And do you think maybe even running the soundboard on this podcast might be in your future? Possibly. I think I remember saying something in a very early meeting with you about how no two days were alike, and whatever any of us seem to have come in to do and been hired to do is just the tip of the iceberg.
Yes. No. Definitely true on that. Yeah. I think experience has shown everyone on our team right now that that's the case, but it's fun.
High energy. It keeps life interesting. That's true. So tell us about your family. Yes.
So I have my mom and dad. They both live in that small little farm town. Emmett is the name of it, just if you were all sitting on the edges of your seat wondering if I'd ever tell you. I was. Is that something we might see on this bag of potatoes at Five Guys?
Yes. You might actually see our hometown up on the board at Five Guys. I take a picture every time too when I go Cool. Of the town of Idaho. So they live there.
My dad actually is the head of investigation for that small town, so I know pretty much everybody there because of that. And all the dirt. Yes. And they know all of mine, unfortunately, too. So let's share that.
Let's Oh. I'm intrigued. I don't know if we have time for that. Hold on. No.
We'll make time. Clear your calendars. I'm gonna pull up criminal record. Hold on one sec. Oh, great.
Great. The nice part is is you can't get away with anything when your dad is that high up in the police force. So I was a very good angel halo kid, which was great. What's the worst thing that's on that list? I got pulled over once because the police officer missed me and wanted to say hi.
That's great. So And then I have a sister who just recently finished up her first year of college at Boise State, which is my alma mater, and she plays rugby for their school team. Great. Now since you'd been here in the Phoenix area previously, you also had a lot of connections here too as well. Do you have kind of friends or family away from family?
I do. I call them my adopted family. I, through the residency, met so many amazing people, so many great leaders, and the surprise campus really kind of took me under their wing, and I consider that whole team, that whole staff team, and the congregation just part of my adopted family. Well, we're definitely excited that you made the move to come down and join our team. You've moved a lot of things forward that we just didn't have the bandwidth to do before you joined, and so it's we've really enjoyed having you on the team.
Now tell us a little bit about if you have some free time, what does Jess do? I love to cook and bake. So if you need I definitely need more taste testers. So if you to eat, let me know, and and I'll add you to that list. We'll put a new Rock Slack channel of of food testers Do shit.
For you. , I don't know if they'd keep, but so you might have to make a visit. Well, you might have to experiment with shelf stability a little bit. Right. Yes.
So I I love to cook and bake. I love to hike, and I love to read. What are you reading right now? Right now, I actually just picked up a new book. I listened to a podcast, with Craig Groeschel, and he's one of my favorite authors.
And he his new book is called Wow, now I can't even think of the title anymore. It's because I'm put on the spot. I do the same thing. This isn't about when your life isn't going so well, it helps you Yeah. Heard that's a in the dark.
It is. You talked and I remembered. Right. He's , it's not for everybody. If your life is going great, you don't need this book.
I'm , I'd to meet someone that. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Well, there's always different seasons of life that you go in, and so definitely my point of picking this book is for when I do hit a low point that it's right there, but also you can use those materials and those ideas to help somebody else when they hit that point for them.
So that was the point of reading it. It's been good so far. Yeah. That's good. Alright.
Well, we really appreciate you being on the team and taking the time to join us here to talk to the RAC community. Thanks so much. And don't forget, come to the next master class for Jess's specialty chocolate cupcakes and birthday celebration. I really see this as being something you need to get in soon at this point since we've had the cupcake announcement because we do have a cap. So True.
