Sometimes a student doesn't pass on the first try. Retakes give them a clean second attempt at any scored activity, so a failed quiz or a weak submission becomes a redo instead of a dead end. You set a passing bar (Retake Threshold) per activity, and Rock handles what happens when a score lands below it.

Set the Retake Threshold

When editing an activity in the learning plan, you'll find Retake Threshold beside Points. It's the minimum score a student must earn to avoid being assigned a retake for that activity. Leave it empty and retakes stay off.

The field appears on the three activity types that produce a real score: Assessment, File Upload and Point Assessment. Acknowledgment, Content Article and Video Watch award their full points on completion, so there's no score for a threshold to check and no retake to assign.

How Retakes Are Assigned

Automatically - An Assessment built entirely from Multiple Choice items grades itself, so Rock assigns the retake the moment a submitted score lands below the threshold. The student is returned to a fresh attempt right away with a message explaining why. No email goes out on this path, because they're already looking at the explanation.

By the facilitator - File Upload, Point Assessment and any Assessment with Short Answer items are graded by hand, so the decision stays with the facilitator. While scoring, an Assign Retake checkbox appears whenever the entered Points Earned is below the activity's threshold. Save with it checked and the activity reopens for the student.

When a facilitator assigns a retake, Rock queues the Retake Required system communication to the student, delivered by email or text message per their communication preference. Manual grading can lag days behind the submission, so that notice is what gives the student timely awareness that a retake is waiting rather than leaving them to discover it in the class workspace.

Assigning a retake deletes the student's previous submission, including any uploaded file, score and facilitator comment. Rock keeps no attempt history, so save anything worth keeping before you check the box. There is no limit on how many times an activity can be sent back.
